Junior Girls County Week
HOSTED BY SUSSEX at Worthing Golf Club. Our girls competed with the elite Junior Girls from Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire & Kent
DAY 1 Morning Singles vs Surrey
Surrey 6 Middlesex 1. An emphatic win for Surrey who have strength in depth. However the score line is slightly flattering. Three of our girls took the fight late into the rounds and two girls losing on the home home. Ever dependable Saskia won our only point of the morning.
DAY 1 Afternoon Singles vs Sussex
Sussex 5 Middlesex 2. Our girls fought hard against a strong Sussex side, where local knowledge definitely the home side an advantage. Again, there were strong performances from Saskia and Amora.
DAY 2 Morning Singles vs Kent
Kent 7 Middlesex 0. Another day where our girls fought bravely without any success. They are a young team and will grow into competitive golf.
DAY 2 Afternoon Singles vs Hampshire
Hampshire 6 Middlesex 1. Saskia wins 3 & 2. Again, the team fought hard against a strong Hampshire side. A few of the matches went to the 17th hole. Great fighting spirit from our girls.
DAY 3 Stableford Rounds
Our girls played the Stableford in blustery conditions. Our team score was 75 points, placing our team 4th overall in the Stableford Competition.

History
This league was founded in 1978 by Jim Roberts, Junior Organiser at North Middlesex Golf Club. He was worried that talented youngsters were being denied the opportunity to develop their game through outside competition. A total of 8 local clubs were invited to compete in a matchplay competition for a cup that a member of North Middlesex G.C. donated.
The following year the first competition was held with North Middlesex becoming the first champions. Over the years, membership of the league has risen to as many as 26 with a total of 31 different clubs having taken part at one time or another.
Jim died in 2000 aged 84 and the league was taken under the chairmanship of Marylyn Fuller. In 2020, Marylyn and her husband Ed moved to the South Coast. County Secretary of Middlesex Golf suggested that as they are the governing body for amateur golf in the County he felt it was right that they take over the Friern League. He hopes that the County’s resources and reach can help restore the league’s former status
The league is primarily open to any club in Middlesex that wishes to join but nearby clubs may compete by arrangement. The clubs in the leagues play each other both home and away with points being awarded for a win or a halved match. The winners of each league compete in a final and the runners-up play off in a 3rd/4th place match on neutral courses.
The League is open to male and female golfers under the age of 18 on the 1st of January of the current year and with maximum handicaps of 36.4.
In the years 2003, 2004 and 2017 teams from the League were placed 3rd, 3rd and 5th respectively in the English National Final.
